Women are the pillars of growth and development, NAWOJ Abia State Caretaker Committee Chairperson says, as Association embarks on peace and progress walk
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ Abia State Caretaker Committee converged in NUJ press center, Umuahia on Saturday 8th October 2022 to embark on a road walk tagged “Walk for Peace and Progress”, as part of activities geared towards rebuilding a new and vibrant NAWOJ in the state.
A peace walk is a form of nonviolent action where a group marches a set distance to raise awareness for particular issues important to the walkers.
Interacting with our reporter shortly before the exercise, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of NAWOJ Abia State Chapter, Mrs Oluchi Lechi-Ikechukwu said the intention of the Peace Walk was to create awareness of the existence of NAWOJ in Abia State; to pray for peace and to bring female Journalists in the state together.
According to her NAWOJIANS like other women are the central caretakers of families and other organizations and everyone is affected when they are excluded from the process of fostering peace.
The Abia NAWOJ Caretaker Committee Chairperson who also asserted that female Journalists are also advocates for peace, as peacekeepers, relief workers and mediators, said that the role of female journalists in promotion of peace could not be dissociated from the right to freedom of the Press, adding that this was an integral part of human rights.
Her words, ” The role of women, especially professionals like women journalists, in state and national peace can not be over-emphasised. And we know that meaningful development cannot take place in society without the full participation of women in the process. Women are architects of peace and any peaceful society you see today, it starts from the respective home training which mothers, who are the architect, give. So I want to encourage all female Journalists in Abia State to fully participate in promoting peace for sustainable development of the NAWOJ, NUJ and the State.
She reiterated the resolve of her led interim executive to rebuild Abia NAWOJ within the allotted time and to conduct the most peaceful election for female Journalists in the state and passionately appealed for support from NAWOJIANS as her administration is doing its best in fostering peace, progress and unity in the association.
