Rotary Clubs of Umuahia Central and Umuahia Government House, Monday, carried sensitization campaign on Disease Prevention and Treatment; Water and Sanitation, Basic Education and Literacy to Ibeku Central Primary School in Umuahia North L.G.A, of Abia.

The event saw the Clubs donate 10 dual carriage desks; wash hand buckets; toothpaste and brushes; soaps and dishes; cups; hand towels among other educational materials.

Speaking during the joint project, the Synergizer President of Rotary Club of Umuahia Government House, Rtn. Olugu Kalu Ugba said that Rotary Clubs serve communities around the world, each with unique needs and concerns.

According to him, Rotarians have continually adapted and improved the way they respond to those needs, taking on a broad range of service projects.

He said the gesture was in a bid to improve the condition of learning for pupils in the affected school.

Educating the pupils on basic hygiene (proper hand washing and teeth brushing), the Synergizer President of Rotary Club of Umuahia Central, Rtn. Glory Emuchay harped on the importance of learning how to take care of the body properly while one is still young.

Keeping our bodies clean, according to Emuchay will keep us healthy, and that will keep us happy and feeling good.

Rtn. Emuchay said, “We should be brushing our teeth at least twice every day, once in the morning and once before bed. Be sure to brush all of your teeth, even the ones in the back that are hard to reach. Also you should floss your teeth, too. Whenever we eat, food can be left behind between our teeth, and this can cause problems. Gently move the floss between each tooth in order to make sure you remove any food left behind after brushing. It is a good idea to brush your tongue in order to have fresh breath, too”.

She equally called on the pupils to make effective use of the desks to enhance their academic performance.

Responding, the Headmistress of the school, Mrs Nwamara Dike thanked the Club for the donation noting that it will go a long way to address the plight of pupils. 

She seized the opportunity to call on public spirited individuals and organisations to support the effort of the Rotary Club when need arises.

The event featured the adoption of five indigent pupils by the Club.
