Rotary Club of Umuahia fetes pupils at basic education, literacy project


The pupils of Practicing Primary School, Umuahia, Abia State, Wednesday benefitted from the basic education and literacy project carried out by Rotary Club of Umuahia.

The project tagged ‘Dust to Desk’, featured donation of 15 desks, 40 leaves exercise books, packets of pen among others with refreshments.

Speaking at the programme, the Synergizer President, Rotarian Adaeze Iroegbu said prior to coming to the school to execute the project, the Club was there to carry out a NEED assessment to know the basic needs of the pupils.

She said, “We don’t do projects in a particular community because we are from that locality, but the Communities that are in dire need of such”.

She said the gesture was in a bid to improve the condition of learning for pupils in the affected school.

She expressed happiness that the Club was able to put smiles on the faces of the pupils with the donations.

Earlier in his speech, a Past Assistant Governor, PAG Chimdi Oluoha expressed the readiness of the Club to establish an Interact Club in the School in order to groom the pupils to become leaders with the spirit of serving humanity.

He said through the Club the pupils will learn how to serve the community selflessly, as according to him, Rotary is all about service above self.

Speaking respectively in appreciation, the Headmistress of the School, Mrs Juliana Okereke and the PTA chairman, Mr. Eze Ukenye described the event as a welcome development and assured that the desks will be highly protected.
