The Synergizer President of Rotary Club of Umuahia North, District 9142, Rtn. Geraldine Onuorah, has warned that plastic based sanitary pads are not only harmful to the environment but also to the body.

 She therefore encouraged the students of Holy Rosary Girl’s Secondary School, Umuahia, Abia State to always use reusable pads which she described as environmentally friendly.

Sensitizing the students on mensural hygiene and benefits of reusable pads during the Club’s “Pad a girl” project which was done in partnership with the Rotary Club of Pleasanton, USA, Rtn. Onuorah, also described reusable cotton pads as pads simply used during menstruation, which is not thrown away after the period.

According to her, these pads are designed similarly to disposable pads, and are worn the same way.

“When you are finished using a reusable cotton pad, it is then cleaned and ready to be worn again. Reusable cotton pads are available in differing shapes and absorbencies just like disposable pads, however reusable cotton pads tend to be more absorbent than their disposable counterparts”, she further informed the students, numbering over 600.

Speaking on “Mensural Hygiene and benefits of reusable pads”, a resource person, Rtn. Ejemba Sonia further informed the students that reusable pads are discreet, comfortable, affordable, safer than disposable pads and saves money too.

Rtn. Ejemba who maintained that it is not sinful or a taboo to  experience the monthly menstruation, tasked the students to ensure that they have access to the clean, blood-absorbing products that can be changed in private as often as necessary.

Ejemba who also disclosed that reusable sanitary pads have less toxins and does not leak, said, “They are environmentally friendly and are healthier than single-use pads. With the reusable sanitary pads, you’ll save money and support small businesses”.

She said that good menstrual hygiene empowers girls to rise, buttressing further that menstruation is a natural phenomenon that must be handled with the utmost care.

She said that the introduction of reusable sanitary pads is aimed at reducing hygiene poverty.

She revealed plans of the Club to engage interested students in a free practical session for a period of four weeks on how to make reusable pads which will also aid them to be self-reliant through profits made from the sales of the pad.

Responding on behalf of the students, Champion Rosemary Oriaku, the Interact Staff Adviser, Interact Club Holy Rosary Girl’s Secondary School, appreciated the Club for the sensitization.
