As scarcity of Naira notes worsened amidst equally worsening petrol supply crises, despite the extension of the deadline for acceptance of the old Naira notes as legal tender, the African Democratic Congress, ADC candidate for Umuahia North State Constituency, Rev. Blessed Amalambu, has called on the Federal government to introduce measures that will alleviate the  plight faced by the citizens.

Interacting with our Correspondent shortly after he visited respectively, St. Michael’s Anglican Church, Okaiuga-Nkwoegwu; inhabitants of Umukabia-Okpuala and Umuda-Isingwu, in Umuahia North L.G.A, of Abia State, Amalambu decried that commercial and daily life activities across Nigeria have come under new pressures associated with the currency swap.

Amalambu who perceived that the Bank managers might systematically withheld the new currency from flowing generously, also called on the security agencies to place their surveillance cameras on them, in  order to curtail or put to a stop all forms of shape practices for the benefit of the common man.

His words, “Nobody will deny the fact that we’re currently witnessing harsh environment, particularly economic hardship. This is the first time I’ve seen that money is being sold for people to survive. People use money to buy money at a higher cost and resell it to the public.

“All these issues are trending up because it appears that the Central Bank of Nigeria action lacked proper planning. Yes, the change of currency is a good development, but it should have been a gradual process, which should have taken about six months. While they gradually call back the old currency, they will also gradually, pump in the new currency until a sizeable volume of the new notes is in circulation to cushion the adverse effect of the swap. But unfortunately, this approach was not introduced”.

Rev. Blessed Amalambu.
