Design flood prevention schemes, IWU tells Government

The Igbo World Union has decried the plights faced by the victims of flood desaster recorded in some parts of the country recently, and imagined the extreme hardship the people are going through as a result.

The Union maintained that the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has been aware of the problems for years and also knew the current flooding was imminent sometime in August of this year because Cameroon warned Nigeria of her intention to release the excess water being held by the Lagdo Dam in Northern Cameroon.

The group which spoke through their President General, Sir Mishak Nnanta shortly after their meeting in Enugu State, therefore called for a convocation of all critical stakeholders to evaluate the situation, the nation’s preparedness and also fashion out ways to effectively manage the situation in the future.

Nnanta who x-rayed the devastating impact the flood had on businesses, especially on small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), carefully observed that most of these operators may be unprepared and vulnerable to the range of both direct and indirect impacts.

While also pointing out that a majority of small business owners have suffered huge losses due to the heavy flooding, Sir Nnanta, who is CEO of Miracle Transport Limited and also a member of Association of Luxury and Bus Owners of Nigeria, ALBON pointed that the commuters and other transporters are having difficulties within the period even as he observed that the infrastructural damage recorded is extensive.

 The Union joined other well-meaning individuals to appealed to the government to come to the aid of the suffering victims of the annual devastating floods by providing a sustainable solution to the preventable loss of lives and property annually.
