ABSG warns residents against dumping refuse in drains

Abia State Commissioner for Environment, Chief Sam Nwogu, has warned residents against dumping of refuse in drains, saying the action could lead to flooding in the state.

Nwogu who warned residents against dumping refuse in drainage channels and waterways, while answering questions from newsmen in Umuahia North Local Government headquarters, shortly after monitoring the level of participation in the month of March, 2023, reminded them of the recurrent flooding in some parts of the States particularly after downpour and why such should be avoided in the State.
Nwogu, who was represented by Mrs. Obi-Maduka Ihuaku, a Deputy Director, Environmental Health in the Ministry, noted as the rainy season gradually sets in, that measures would be put in place to address any challenge that might trail incessant rainfall as witnessed previously in some states.
Nwogu however maintained that irrespective of the volume of rainfall, water would still flow through the drains and discharge into the various channels in the state of residents embrace the habit of dumping refuse in the locations mapped out for it.
“I must commend the residents for turning out en masse during the sanitation exercise. And on the same note, I must encourage them to maintain the culture of cleanliness and shun dumping refuse indiscriminately and on the drains. It will aid the flood water to flow easily and also help to avoid any disaster”, Nwogu said.
