Abia State Judicial Panel Of Inquiry Submits Five Volume Report To Gov. Ikpeazu
… Recommends Millions Of Naira To Be Paid To Victims
The Abia State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on-Police Brutality, Brutality, Extra judicial Killings and other Related Matters has today July 5, 2021, submitted, its 5 volume reports to the Governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, with a recommendation that over N511 million naira be paid to victims of police brutality and inhuman treatment.
Receiving the report, as contained in a press release signed and made available to newsmen by a member of the committee, Comrade John Emejor, the Governor who was represented by the Secretary to Abia State Government, Barr. Chris Ezem, commended the Panel for rendering historic and selfless services to their fatherland.
Governor Ikpeazu promised that Abia State Government will clinically study the report with a view to implementing it.
Abia State Governor stressed that the report would guide the public on how best to relate with the police and other security agencies, reiterating that the security institutions need the support and cooperation of the citizens, in order to excel in their duties.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of Abia State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Police Brutality,.Extra-Judicial Killings and other related matters, and former Retired Chief Judge of Abia State, Hon. Justice Sunday Imo, who came forward and presented the 5- volume Reports to the Governor of Abia State, stated that:
“The first volume contained, the main report, the second volume contained all the petitions, Volume 3, deals with records and proceedings of the Panel, while volume 4 centered on Findings and recommendations of the Panel while the last volume contains case files, exhibits among others”.
Hon. Justice Imo (rtd) announced that the Panel recommended over N511 million naira be paid to the victims of security agents brutality and other human rights abuses.
He revealed that the Panel received 86 cases/petitions and 46 went through full hearing while the remaining cases were dismissed or struck out.
The former Chief Judge of Abia State recalled that the Panel were inaugurated by the Governor of Abia State on October 23,2020 with a charge to expeditiously treat cases of Police brutality from 2015 till date.
In a vote of thanks, the Secretary of the Panel, and the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Justice, Barr. Lady Uzoma Uche-Ikonne, profusely thanked the Governor for finding the Panel members fit to serve the State in this capacity.
She noted that the opportunity will remain ever-green in their memory.
The 21 panel members include; Bishop Sunday Onuoha, Barr. Iheonu Chionye, Mr Nwaojigba Darlington, Comrade John Emejor, Engr Daniel Chinago, amongs several others.
