Rotary Club Distributes Wastebins To Tricycle Operators


Rotary Club of Umuahia Government House, District 9142 has distributed over 50 customized wastebins to tricycle (Keke) operators and minibus drivers in Umuahia, Abia State capital.

This action was geared towards assisting the State Ministry of Environment and Abia State Government improve the aesthetic value of the State.

Addressing the leadership of Isi-gate and Onuimo tricycle operators shortly before the distribution exercise, the Visionary President of Rotary Club of Umuahia Government House, Rtn. Emeka Wachuku disclosed that the exercise had the approval of the State Ministry of Environment.

He said through the Wate, Sanitation and Hygiene campaign, Rotary Club is trying to educate the Society that clean water and sanitation is a human right.

According to him, Rotary members integrate water, sanitation, and hygiene into education projects, and when Abians learn about disease transmission and practice good hygiene, they will become agents of positive change and can also take those lessons home to their families, expanding the Rotary’s impact.

Rtn. Wachuku advised the tricycle operators to encourage their passengers to always make use of the Wastebins carefully and conspicuously placed in their tricycles to assist the state sustain her clean and green outlook.

Responding, the Chairman of Abia State Tricycle Welfare Association, ATRIWA, Express Tower of Progress, Umuahia, Hon. Agbai Onuoha described the campaign as a welcome development, as it will succeed in getting rid of dirts on the streets and roads.

He pointed out that the State Environmental Protection Agency, ASEPA cannot solely protect the Abia environment, hence the need for other organizations to emulate the Rotary Club in their selfless efforts to have a healthy Abia.

Some of the tricycle operators who include: Mr. Okeke Chinenye, Mr. Kingsley Otti among others appreciated the Club for the campaign and promised to religiously carry out the motive behind the campaign.
