As Nigerians face economic challenges, Dr. Peace Amaraegbulam, an orthopedic surgeon and founder of The Straight Child Foundation, asserts that the simple act of hugging can offer comfort and hope, reminding us all of the enduring power of human touch.

Speaking with our correspondent in Umuahia, Abia State, Dr. Amaraegbulam highlighted the therapeutic benefits of hugging, which can convey deep affection and emotions, offering solace to the downtrodden and indigent.

In the midst of Nigeria’s challenging economic climate, Amaraegbulam, who emphasizes the profound impact of hugging, advocates for public displays of emotion, suggesting that hugging can serve as a mental, emotional, and social balm.

She believes that in these harsh economic times, a simple hug can provide much-needed relief and connection, fostering a sense of community and support among Nigerians.

Her words, “The significance of National Hugging Day lies in its ability to spread happiness and hope. By encouraging people to give heartfelt hugs, the day aims to remind us of the importance of expressing love and appreciation to those around us. It serves as a gentle reminder of the simple yet profound impact of human connection.”

“As we prepare to celebrate this special day, it’s important to reflect on the various types of hugs and their meanings. Understanding these nuances can enhance our interactions, allowing us to communicate our feelings more effectively. Hug Day 2024 promises to be a day of warmth and connection, bridging gaps and fostering unity.”

Dr. Mrs Amaraegbulam encouraged Nigerians to hug at home and “every opportunity that we have”.

In conclusion, Dr. Amaraegbulam’s call to embrace hugging as a therapeutic practice resonates deeply in today’s world.

National Hugging Day, celebrated annually on January 21, underscores this sentiment. Established by Rev. Kevin Zaborney on March 29, 1986, in Caro, Michigan, the day encourages people worldwide to embrace the power of positive physical touch. This year, the day falls on a Tuesday, January 21, 2025 inviting everyone to partake in the joy of hugging.
