Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to eradicating insecurity and enhancing safety in schools across the state.
Represented by Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, Otti made this declaration during the commissioning of a constituency project by Hon. Mathias Ume Nwachi at Nneato Secondary School, Umunneochi LGA.
Emphasizing the paramount importance of student safety, Otti instructed school heads to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
He also warned against unauthorized encroachment on school lands, stating that violators would face legal consequences.
Otti highlighted education as a core mandate of his government, announcing the introduction of free and compulsory education in line with the state’s education trust policy.
“No more tuition or fees of any kind will be tolerated,” he declared, making school attendance mandatory for all children of school age, adding also, “Parents found allowing their children to hawk or loiter during school hours will face prosecution”.
Commending Hon. Mathias Ume Nwachi for prioritizing education in his constituency projects, Otti encouraged continued efforts in alignment with the government’s educational priorities.
Hon. Mathias Ume Nwachi, who also spoke during the event, expressed gratitude to Governor Otti for the timely approval and release of funds for the project, a five-classroom block completed swiftly by a dedicated committee.
He reiterated his commitment to transparency and accountability, aligning with the governor’s vision.
Nwachi also thanked the governor for his unprecedented support for Umunneochi, including tackling banditry and kidnappings, appointing local members to strategic positions, and rehabilitating major roads.
He announced plans for ongoing welfare programs, such as annual WAEC/NECO exam fee payments and a four-year bursary scheme for selected undergraduates.
In his welcome address, Mr. Ihionu J.I, Principal of Nneato Senior Secondary School, praised Governor Otti’s dedication to revitalizing the education sector, evident in actions like regular teacher salary payments and the introduction of free education.
He appealed for attention to remaining challenges, such as dilapidated buildings and the lack of security personnel.
The event culminated in the commissioning of the new classrooms by Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, marking a significant step forward for education in Abia State.
