In December 2024, The Straight Child Foundation (TSCF) reported the enrollment and commencement of treatment for 71 children with congenital clubfoot across 19 clinics in 11 states. Approximately 70 percent of these children are under 12 months old.
Mr. Bright Amadi, the Project Supervisor, revealed that the organization achieved an average of 4.6 casting visits per child before performing tenotomy.
Amadi who said that by the end of December 2024, over 90 percent of the enrolled children had undergone tenotomy, adhering to global standards, however, said that about 10 percent of children discontinued treatment during the casting stage, and less than 5 percent during the bracing stage.
He revealed that a new treatment center was also established at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital in Yenagoa, Bayelsa.
To enhance clubfoot surveillance, early detection, and referral, Amadi further disclosed that training sessions were conducted for primary healthcare providers in Anambra and Enugu States.
He said that administrative and clinic supportive supervisory visits were carried out at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital and Specialist Teaching Hospital in Irrua, Edo State, focusing on hands-on training, clinic operations assessment, and data quality evaluation.
Also, basic Ponseti training, according to him was also conducted at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital as part of the capacity-building efforts for the new treatment site.
Additionally, he disclosed that CAST training was organized at the General Hospital Ikom to enhance the clinic staff’s data management skills.
