The Umuejehie community, Ofeme in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State proudly hosted its first-ever Umuejehie Day on December 27, 2024, at the village square, under the esteemed chairmanship of Barrister Johnson Kanu, former President General of the Ohuhu Welfare Union Worldwide,
The event, a vibrant tapestry of tradition and unity, featured the Igboto-Nma/Ogu, Iwa-Akwa, and Iza Aha (Age Grade) ceremonies, alongside special awards recognizing outstanding contributions to the community.
In his opening address, Hon. Prince Obioma Oburuoga, Chairman of the Umuejehie Community Development Union Federated, extolled the virtues of Umuejehie as a community rich in natural resources and human capacity.
He emphasized the importance of the event in reviving and celebrating the community’s cultural heritage, noting that the vibrant youth and the spirit of unity were pivotal in bringing the celebration to fruition.
The annual Umuejehie Day, set to occur every December 27th, aims to reinforce cultural traditions such as the Iwa-Akwa, held triennially, and the Igboto-Nma/Ogu, celebrated every six years. These events, collectively known as “Iriegu Ukwu Umuejehie,” are designed to foster unity and development within the community.
Hon. Oburuoga urged attendees to embrace unity and love, essential catalysts for meaningful development, warning against the divisive nature of hatred.
He praised the collective efforts of the Umuejehie people, whose unity of purpose made the day’s success possible.
The event according to Oburuoga marked a historic moment as the first set of elders were ceremonially retired from active communal service, though their wisdom and guidance remain invaluable. The celebration also included the institution of an age-grade system and the presentation of awards to deserving individuals, all aimed at spurring further development.
Oburuoga said Umuejehie’s commitment to progress is longstanding, with a history of pioneering community initiatives post-war.
According to him, recent efforts have revitalized this spirit, leading to significant infrastructural developments, including borehole installations, modernization of oil mills, and improved road access.
According to him, his administration, inaugurated in March 2024, has achieved notable milestones, including the acquisition of communal land and meeting the requirements of the Community and Social Development Agency (CSDA) for funding.
These achievements he said underscore the community’s dedication to sustainable development.
Engr. Sam N. Enwere, President General of the community in his address, expressed his gratitude for the collective strength and determination of the Umuejehie people.
He highlighted the significance of the Igboto-Nma and Iwa-Akwa ceremonies in honouring elders and fostering community cohesion.
Barrister Johnson Kanu, in his remarks, emphasized the importance of community development, unity, and cultural preservation, applauding the successful inauguration of Umuejehie Day.
The celebration concluded with a call for continued unity and commitment to building a brighter future for Umuejehie, as the community looks forward to future editions of this landmark event.
