UMUAHIA, Abia State — Key figures in Abia State have commended the Federal Government’s decision to collaborate on the construction of the State’s first international airport, a move they believe signals a commitment to revitalizing economic growth in the South-East.
Chief Richard Harrison, a former Commissioner for Finance, current President of the Umuahia Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (UCCIMA), Chief Chidi Nkem Aruoma alongside Engr. Dr. James Nnadozie Uchegbuo, President General of the Igbo Vanguard Group (IVG), expressed their enthusiasm for the project in a recent interview conducted via WhatsApp.
Harrison, also the chairman of the Harrison Goodness Foundation, emphasized that the airport represents a transformative economic asset for Abia. “Once realized, the airport will redefine the economic landscape of our state,” he stated, noting that airports serve as critical hubs that drive economic activity.
He highlighted the potential benefits of the airport to the local economy, particularly in tourism and job creation. “This project will not only provide direct and indirect employment opportunities, but it will also stimulate economic growth and alleviate poverty in remote communities,” Harrison added, encouraging landowners and host communities to embrace the initiative.
Chief Aruoma described the airport as a potential “economic engine” for Abia State. He pointed out that even small airports generate significant economic impacts, potentially reaching hundreds of millions, if not billions, of Naira.
“Once completed, the airport will facilitate operations for various sectors, including small businesses, educational institutions, postal services, and government activities,” he stated.
Engr. Uchegbuo, who is also the President General of Ahuwa-Oboro autonomous community, Ikwuano L.G.A, echoed these sentiments, expressing confidence that the airport would enhance regional connectivity and bolster local business activities.
He noted the vital role of airports in fostering economic development, particularly in developing nations. “Airports not only improve transport infrastructure but also drive local economic growth, create jobs, and enhance tourism,” he said.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the airport recently took place, marking a significant step towards realizing this ambitious project aimed at shaping the economic future of Abia State.
