The Abia State government announces that the Monthly Sanitation Exercise for December 2024 will take place on Saturday, December 21, from 7 AM to 10 AM. This date has been adjusted due to the festive period, highlighting the importance of maintaining a clean environment throughout the celebrations.
According to a statement signed by Honorable Commissioner Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna of the Ministry of Environment, movement of people and vehicles will be restricted during the sanitation hours. Only those on essential duties will be exempt, provided they present valid identification or appropriate authorization upon request.
Local Government Chairpersons, Traditional Rulers, Town Union Leaders, Religious Leaders, and representatives from Youth and Women’s organizations within the state are urged to monitor and raise awareness about the importance of this exercise among their communities, as well as to participate actively.
All markets, motor parks, and both private and public transport companies are required to close on Friday, December 20, 2024, from 7 AM to 9 AM to conduct their own cleanup activities.
Personnel from the Nigeria Police, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps are according to the release instructed to assemble at their designated departure points for deployment.
The release also encouraged residents to stay at home, clean their surroundings, and wear face masks during this sanitation exercise.
Failure to comply with these regulations, according to the release, may result in arrest and prosecution under the Abia State Basic Environmental Law.
The release enjoined the citizens and residents to cooperate to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment during this festive season.
