The State Director National Orientation Agency (NOA), Abia State Mrs Regina Iroha has called on the youth in the country to be disciplined and patriotic citizens which are the major attributes of the National core values and the National value charter.
Mrs Iroha made the call while delivering a paper to the 2024 batch ‘C’ Stream 1 corps members at the NYSC orientation camp at Umunna in Bende LGA.
She charged the corps members to join hands with the government to institutionalize those positive attributes that will transform the nation into a better society.
Mrs Iroha who was represented by Mr Goddy Onwuchekwa, Assistant Director in the Agency reiterated the pivotal role of value re-orientation in the transformation agenda of the government.
She encouraged the youth to show resilience and accept the components of value re-orientation and National values Charter as a call to duty and the driving force that will restore the lost glory of the nation.
She condemned the get rich quick syndrome that has ruined the lives of many youth and urged the youth to imbibe the core values of discipline, self reliance, patriotism, integrity and tolerance as enshrined in the country’s constitution.
In another development, Brigadier General, Y. D. Ahmed, Director-General, National Youth Service Corps, has admonished Corps Members in Abia State to desist from incessant and unnecessary travels and night journeys that could endanger their lives.
General Ahmed gave the admonition to the 2024 Batch C Stream I Corps Members on Sunday 8th December, at the multipurpose hall of the Umunna Bende NYSC Abia Orientation Camp
during his official visit to the camp.
The Director General who spoke on various aspects of the service year, told the Corps Members that if they must travel, they should obtain the necessary permission and must travel with registered transport companies.
He further urged the Corps Members to pay attention to the security lectures and other instructions given to them on camp, noting that the welfare and security of Corps Members are great priorities to NYSC.
“NYSC will not post Corps members to areas prone to security threats”, the DG said.
On Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, the NYSC boss stated that the essence of SAED was to prepare them for the future using the slogan, ‘one corps member two skills’.
Furthermore, he stated that NYSC is in collaboration with various financial institutions like Bank Of Industry (BOI) Access, Wema Bank and others to give give Corps Members interest free loans and grants as startups for their businesses.
He had urged the Corps Members to use the service year to reflect about the future and improve themselves.
On issues of relocation, the DG advised that they should change their mind, remain where they are posted and do their bit to improve their host communities by engaging in productive ventures that will improve their lives.
Speaking on Community Development Service, the DG urged them to participate actively and embark on projects personal or group that could lead to them being rewarded, including the Presidential Award that comes with automatic employment. Concluding, the DG charged the Corps Members to respect the the culture and traditions of their host communities.
Earlier in her brief, Mrs. Gladys Adama, State Coordinator NYSC Abia, reported that the Corps Members had been disciplined and are adapting to the regimented camp life.
Further, she said that the state government has commenced rehabilitation work at the orientation camp.
In his vote of thanks on behalf of the corps members, the Corps Camp Director for the week, appreciated the DG for his visit, admonitions and for his five (5) policy thrusts geared towards improving the welfare and security of corps members.
The visit saw the DG entertained with a cultural dance display by the Corps Members, while the Acting Director Special Duties, presented cash gifts to some groups of Corps Members on behalf of the Director General who earlier on had announced two cow gift to the Corps Members.
With him during the visit were the Acting Directors, Information and Public Relations, Mrs Caroline Embu and her colleague of the Special Duties, Alhaji Nura Umah.
Also in another development, Governor Alex Otti of Abia state has said the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC has over the fifty-one years of its existence contributed immensely to the development of the nation and the youths through its various community development programs
Governor Otti stated this in a message to the Swearing-in ceremony of the 2024 batch C stream 1 corps members deployed to serve in Abia State at the NYSC Permanent orientation camp in Umunna Bende local government area of the state.
The Governor represented by the Commissioner for Youth, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba noted that his administration is determined to ensure that all the sacrifices corps members are making to better the living standard of their host communities would not go unappreciated.
He urged them to be diligent, discipline and show high sense of responsibility and maturity in all they do both in orientation camp, during their service year and after their service year
Governor Otti assured the corps members of government’s commitment to make their stay in the state not only comfortable but remarkable.
Earlier in a remark the Coordinator NYSC Abia state, Mrs Gladys Adama stated that the NYSC orientation course which is the first cardinal programme of the scheme is designed to essentially prepare Corps Members for the task of nation building amongst many other objectives.
She pointed out that since on arrival to the orientation camp, the Corps Members have so far demonstrated a high sense of discipline, dedication and willingness to learn.
A total of one thousand and eighty seven corps members are participating in the three weeks orientation course.
