The Project Supervisor of The Straight Child Foundation, TSCF Mr. Bright Amadi, has announced that 72 children with congenital clubfoot have been enrolled and commenced treatment across the 17 Clubfoot clinics in the 10 states covered by TSCF.
Presenting a monthly report from the Foundation to newsmen in Umuahia, Abia State, Amadi disclosed that over 70 percent of the children were below the age of 12 months.
He said that the Foundation maintained an average casting visits of less than 4.6 per child, before tenotomy.
According to him, over 90 percent of the children enrolled so far received tenotomy (in line with global standards) as at the end of the month, with about 8 percent and 3 percent of the children on treatment dropping out at the casting and bracing level, respectively.
Towards the enhancement of Clubfoot Surveillance, Amadi disclosed that early detection and referral training was held for primary health care workers in Isuikwuato LGA by Federal Medical Centre, FMC Umuahia, and primary healthcare workers at Eket and Onna LGA in Akwa Ibom State.
He said that Basic Ponseti training was also held at General Hospital Ikom, as part of capacity enhancing activities required for the activation of a treatment site at the Hospital.
His words, Cast training was held at the Immanuel General Hospital Eket, to build capacity of the staff of the clinic for data handling.

“Administrative and Clinic Supportive Supervisory Visits were made to the clinics at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Enugu State, and Alex Ekwueme Federal Unuversity Teaching Hospital, Abakiliki, Ebonyi State for hands-on training and assessment of clinic operations.
“Also a new treatment center was activated in Cross River State at the General Hospital, Ikom, in Cross River State”.
Furthermore, he disclosed that TSCF was also represented at the Nigerian Orthopaedic Association (NOA) Preconference Workshop, and Annual General Meeting held in Enugu, which was focused on enhancing capacity in the treatment of clubfoot cases in Nigeria.
