As some countries across the globe celebrate the year 2024 National House Wife’s Day, Dr. Grace Chiboagui Okaro, the National President of African Women Entrepreneurship Program (AWEP), Nigeria marks the day celebrating Homemakers by saying that, “women’s role in the family and society is not an easy task as it takes passion, patience and other special endowments of nature to achieve a balance between family, work and personal responsibilities”.
Dr. Okaro , who is also a Past District Governor of Rotary International District 9142, Nigeria stated this while interacting with our correspondent in commemoration of the day.
Okaro who observed that the task of a housewife is a spaceless and often a thankless job commended all stay-at-home mothers and wives whose primary duties are to take care of the children and the home which gives rise to a better society.
National Housewife’s Day is observed every year on the third day of November to celebrate and honour the people who keep our homes running. Okaro reiterated the primary roles and responsibilities of women and the difference between a housewife and a working wife and observed that a housewife typically manages the home front and family and provide full-time care, while a working wife is employed outside the home, balancing career commitments with domestic duties.
She harped on the need for housewives to come out of the web which confines them to only homemaking and learn skills in order to help their various families wrestle the challenges and economic realities of the present day society.
According to her, “Reducing the gender gap in education, health, political participation, and economic inclusion will significantly increase the economic competitiveness”.
She pointed out that women bring unique skills, perspectives, and experiences to the workplace, which help
businesses succeed in today’s competitive and rapidly changing environment.
She also explained that in Africa, women are the backbone of their families and communities, and they represent the continent’s greatest potential to unlock economic growth, as they provide the majority of labour, products, and innovative ideas with the least amount of resources.
She encouraged women to join women business organizations like the African Women Entrepreneurship Program (AWEP) designed to create business environments, and empower them to become women entrepreneurs and voices of change in their communities.
In conclusion, she emphasized that the presence of women in the business world is not only beneficial but also necessary and should be encouraged by governments”.
