The Umuahia North Chairmanship candidate of Social Democratic Party, SDP in the November 2, 2024 Local Government Area election, Hon. Ezenwa Christian Ugwueje (Nature) has expressed dissatisfaction with the Council election and blamed the election umpire – Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, ABSIEC and the State Government for the delayed time of arrival of election materials and of voting.
Ugwueje, who was flanked by his running mate, Hon. Anumudu Charles Chukwuma, told newsmen that the late arrival of election materials contributed largely to the apathy allegedly registered at the Polling units 20 and 70 in Ndagbo Afara and other parts of the Local Government.
“We carried out aggressive campaign prior to this election and we strongly believe the assurance given to us during the peace accord signing of transparent election, but what we are seeing today is just the negative. There is intimidation of the electorate, a lot of eligible voters were disenfranchised, among other anomalies. I am soliciting that this election should be cancelled”.
Interacting with newsmen also at Isieke community primary school, shortly after casting her vote at Polling Unit 006, Igbeaku East Ward 1, Mrs Chinwe Odoemelam, the Deputy Chairmanship candidate of Zenith Labour Party, ZLP Umuahia North, appreciated the transparent nature of the exercise and the presence of the security personnel at the Polling units.
Her words, “The exercise is very impressive and as you can see, voting is going on seriously despite the late arrival of the materials. Security is at the top-notch and there’s no form of harassment”.
Speaking also, the Umuahia North Deputy Chairmanship candidate, Chief Lucky Nwachukwu, who decried the late arrival of election materials, wondered why the election umpire failed to live up to its promises.
He described the exercise as a very poor outing.
