In an effort geared towards addressing the critical need for safe and clean portable water in the schools and enhance public health, the Rotary Club of Umuahia, District 9142 has partnered with Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, USA through the Environfocus Safe Drinking Water Project have donated Microbial Water Filters to the Immaculate Conception Seminary, Ahiaeke, in Umuahia North L.G.A, and Federal Government Girls College in Umuahia South L.G.A, of Abia State.
The Club also stocked the schools’ libraries with English Language dictionaries to serve as reference material for the improvement of the Language.
Speaking during the presentation of the Instant Microbial Water Filters and Dictionaries, the President, Rotary Club of Umuahia, Rotarian Temitope Nnaomah, who said that water is one of the most essential resources humans need to survive, pointed out that for one to be healthy and keep his or her body in good condition, the person needs access to a reliable supply of clean drinking water.
She asserted that one way to ensure that you always have clean water within reach is through water filtration. She expressed optimism that the project would address the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – SDG 3, Good Health and Well-being; SDG 6, Access to Clean Water and Sanitation; SDG 13, Climate Action and SDG 17, Partnership for Goals.
Rtn. Nnaomah, who also said that Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and Basic Education and Literacy are part of the seven areas of focus of Rotary, disclosed that the Club is promoting education other of their host communities.
She described the collaborating Organization, Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, USA as women in love with God, who respond to the needs of the world and their Neighbours through seeking justice, building bridges and sharing life with other women who share in the desire to serve God.
In his speech, the Club’s Service Project Chair, Rotarian Ugochukwu Ajawara, who explained how the microbial filter system works, encouraged the schools to make good use of them to boost their immunity for healthier living.
Explaining what Rotary is all about, Rotarian Chinedu Brown said that Rotary is about selfless service and affects humanity positively through its seven areas of focus.
To promote a better life in their schools communities, Rotarian Brown encouraged the School management and students to embrace the Club and build their life around the Rotary’s Four Way Test of the Things We Think, Say or Do.
Responding, Rev Fr Emmanuel Aguiyi, Rector of Immaculate Conception Seminary, Ahiaeke Umuahia, commended Rotary Club of Umuahia for their kind gesture.
Also speaking, the Senior Perfect of the School, Master Mark Ugorji appreciated Rotary Club of Umuahia and partners for providing them with two microbial water filters and Dictionaries.
Also responding in her school shortly after receiving the donations from the Club, Mrs Ngozi Idika, Principal, Federal Government Girls College, Umuahia, described it as a surprise to both the students, staff and core management of the school.
Appreciating the Club also, Miss Ngozi Madu who spoke on behalf Students, thanked Rotary Club of Umuahia and their partners for remembering their school for the gesture.
She further stated that the Microbial Water Filter given to them will help reduce the water born diseases and assured them they will make very good use of the gifts.
