The Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE Umuahia branch on Monday 16th September, 2024, visited the flood/gully remediation works at Ozuzu Agbama, an ongoing project being handled the Ministry of Environment.

In his speech during the visits to the flood/gully remediation works at Ozuzu Agbama Housing Estate by F-Line road in Umuahia South L.G.A, where work is on going, the NSE Umuahia branch chairman, Engr. Romanus Enyinnaya, expressed his satisfaction with the progress achieved by the Flood and Erosion Control Department of Ministry of Environment on various aspect of the projects, including the deep double drain and different sizes of storm water channels to ensure free flow of water, in order to promote flood control, quality of materials utilized, viable equipment alongside highly experienced and diligent crop of Engineers.


He appreciated Governor Alex Otti administration’s determination to address the menace of flood and gully erosion bedeviling parts of the State,

He pointed out that with the construction of different sizes of storm water channels to see-off the immense run-off being experienced during the rainy season, the effect of gullies and other severe environmental problems in the state, threatening its urban infrastructure, lives, property and physical growth would be mitigated.

“We are here to check out the work that Ministry of Environment is doing to mitigate flooding and erosion in Ozuzu Agbama Housing Estate and we are very impressed. The good thing is to catch it at this early stage, it will among other things, save cost. I must also appreciate Governor Alex Otti for listening and acting on the distress call made by the residents of this area with a prompt intervention work”, Engr. Enyinnaya stated.

He warned residents against clogging drains with refuse in order to prevent flooding and the loss of lives and property that could result from it.

Earlier in his speech, the Head of Department, Flood and Erosion Control Department, Ministry of Environment, Mr. Obinna Onyebuchi, disclosed that before the Ministry’s intervention that the gully had already taken down almost three fences.

On the advantage of the visit by the NSE, he said that in the cause of doing the project, there are some contributions that would be made, for the interest of the job.

Mr. Onyebuchi who said he was happy and impressed to receive the NSE, assured that all the observations made by the Body would be put in practice.

Interacting with our correspondent some of the residents who include Dr. Mrs Tony Obike, appreciated the Abia State Government for its rapid response to their call on the threats of flood and gully erosion in the area and passionately appealed that other areas being threatened by erosion within the vicinity be given urgent attention.

The NSE Umuahia branch chairman was accompanied by a former chairman of the branch, Engr. Uzoma Ohia, Engr. Dike Okorie, General Secretary, Engr. Orji Daniel, Technical Secretary, among others.
