Abia State Government has expressed its readiness to work in collaboration with the Peace Corps of Nigeria to ensure the safety of school children and the learning environment.

Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, the State Deputy Governor stated this during a courtesy visit by the Abia State Command of the Corps.

Emetu said, “There are serious vandalization of school properties and other notorious activities ravaging our schools. Knowing that one of the paramount objectives of the Peace Corps of Nigeria is to make sure that our schools are safe, the need to have a handshake with you is a welcome development”.

The Deputy Governor who hinted that the administration of Gov. Alex Otti, has zero tolerance for dilapidated buildings in schools across the State, also said, “The government is changing the narrative by constructing and retrofitting school buildings, and other infrastructures to provide a conducive environment for learning”.

Engr. Emetu has extolled the Peace Corps of Nigeria for their quest and commitment to providing security in primary and secondary schools across the country.

 He commended them for their resilience and perseverance in pursuing the legislative bill for the Corps establishment by the National Assembly and subsequent assent by the President.

In his remarks, the state Commandant, Patron Obuma Agwu Eni while disclosing that the Peace Corps which is presently a non governmental organization has the core mandate of securing schools especially during examinations and general elections.

Patron Obuma, also encouraged Abia youths to join the Agency now that it is easy in order to secure the state’s quota at the National level.
