Traders and craftsmen displaced from their business on Cameroon street by Owerri road, Umuahia by inferno on the early hours of Sunday, August 25, 2024 have called on the Abia State Government to assist them in recovering from their losses.
The traders have been left in tears, sorrow and financial pain as they count their losses due the inferno which engulfed the shops, destroying goods worth millions of Naira.
Our correspondent who visited the scene on Tuesday, saw some traders crying and trying to clear the debris of the remains from their shops, while some lamented about how to start afresh.
Mr. Ubadire Amalambu, who is into sumo pump, electric fans, stabilizer, copper wire, rewinding materials, generating set/plants repairs, who was grossly affected by the inferno, lamented that he had lost equipments worth over N50 million.
Mr. Amalambu, the CEO of Ubatex Electrical, who prayed that the government should come to their rescue, lamented that he has three (3) children studying at the Higher institution, who have been left stranded by the ugly incident.
Mr. Nduka Nwabangwa, another trader, who deals on Cosmetics, whose shop was also grossly affected. lamented that he lost about N3 million to the inferno.
He said that the saddest thing was that some of them just restocked their shops on Saturday morning and now all their properties have been lost.
Another trader, Mrs Mary Isaac Christopher who deals on cereals, who also lost about N10 million, lamented that many traders would return to poverty, if urgent help did not come.
“We don’t know what next to do, our goods have perished. We bought most of them on credit and now we are stranded”, Mrs Mary lamented.
