Umuahia Chamber of Commerce Industry Mines and Agriculture UCCIMA has called on the government and corporate bodies to assist photographers by providing good laboratories, modern equipment and other facilities to facilitate their works.
The Chamber also called on government at all levels to deliberately employ the services of photographers in projecting its programmes and developments to counter the menace of fake news and misinformation ravaging the society.
The President of the Chamber, Chief Chidi Nkem Aruoma made the call while interacting with our correspondent through WhatsApp chat in commemoration of the year 2024 World Photography Day.
Celebrated on August 19 annually, World Photography Day has a markedly global character due to how it has evolved since its origin and the contribution of people from different continents in its consolidation.
Aruoma further called on all tiers of government to create a centre where those interested in learning photography, would be enrolled to learn with modern equipment and in turn provoke youths interest in arts and photography and create jobs for the teeming population.
According to him, photo news has remained a veritable tool to drive positive social change and young willing Nigerians need to be encouraged to venture into photo-journalism.
On the theme of World Photography Day 2024 “An Entire Day”, Aruoma observed that it is a call on professional photographers to capture images that challenge conventional perspectives and offer fresh insights into everyday scenes, subjects, and environments.
He encouraged Nigerians to value photographers and also recognize and appreciate the art, science and history of photography.
He said that the Chamber would continue to support photographers through trainings and workshops to enable them upgrade and adapt to the modern trends in photography.
According to records available, World Photography Day is celebrated on August 19 to commemorate the invention of the daguerreotype process by Louis Daguerre on August 19, 1839.
However, the origin and history of World Photography Day arose at different times and in different parts of the world, but with the common denominator of the love for photography of O.P. Sharma, Korske Ara and John Morzen.
