The Abia State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has inaugurated members of ethics and disciplinary committee.
The committee is headed by the National Officer of the Union and member of Correspondents Chapel, Comrade Boniface Okoro.
Comrade Chukwuma Emele, Chairman of the BCA chapel, Mrs Nkechinyere Ekejiuba, of the Information chapel, among others are also members of the Committee.
Inaugurating the members during the monthly congress of the Union in Umuahia, Comrade Victor Ndukwe, the Abia NUJ Chairman, mandated the Committee to thoroughly investigate reported cases of professional misconduct by any Journalist and recommend necessary sanctions.
The State Chairman however notified the Committee that they are independent of the state council influence, rather they are to report to the National Secretariat of their activities.
He further said that the committee is needed to check the excesses and unethical behaviours of journalists in the state.
Responding, the Chairman of the Committee, Comrade Boniface Okoro, pointed out that they were not constituted to encourage crisis but to ensure that any member of the Union accused of any misconduct gets fair hearing and justice, but warned that the committee will not fail to indict any member who chose the wrong path.
Comrade Okoro who assured that the Committee would be just, fair, and firm in carrying out its duties, reminded members that the Union relies much on documents as evidence to do its work effectively and efficiently.

Comrade Okoro, who also called for support from members of the Council, maintained that their inauguration is a call for members to begin to behave professionally.
