Rotary Club of Umuahia, District 9142 has revealed its preparedness to provide a solar powered water borehole at Awuja community in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State.
Rotarian Temitope Nnaomah, PHF disclosed this shortly after her installation as the 44th president of the Club in Umuahia.
Awuja, an agrarian community with little or no basic amenities to boast of, was adopted by the Rotary Club of Umuahia about twelve years ago shortly after its first visit to the community.
The agrarian village littered with more of mud houses depicts a picture of people ostracized from society or forgotten by their Government. The faces of the villagers during the last visit sends a message of people living in total neglect, dejection and isolation.
There exist no primary healthcare center in the village and their sick ones, pregnant and nursing mothers, as reported by the villagers, have to travel to the communities of Uzuakoli or Ozuitem to access medical care and, in the case of emergency, the patient is left at the mercy of any available/willing cyclist to convey him/her to the health center miles away from the village.

Rotarian Nnaomah, who also disclosed that the Club would also build a 10-room block facility in Awuja, maintained that the Club under her watch would deposit an indelible footprint on the sands of history of Awuja community.
“This year, we will embark on critical projects that will transform lives in our community”, the 44th president stated as she listed the renovation of the newborn incubation centre at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia (the project the Club did about 40 years ago) and completion of a 3-room block toilet at Ugwunchara Primary School as some of the critical projects, all totally 36 million naira.
“These projects are crucial, and with your financial support, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of our fellow citizens. I urged you all to donate generously, to support our efforts, and join us in making a lasting impact”, Rotarian Nnaomah passionately appealed.

She further disclosed that in fulfilment of one of the Rotary International areas of focus – Community and Economic Development, the Club in collaboration with Goldenjay Foundation and Glams of Vickie’s trained and empowered five young ladies to start up their own business in makeup skills.

In his valedictory speech, the outgoing 2023/2024 President of the Club, Rotarian Irem Okafor Kalu, assured the new president of the Club’s support to ensure she finishes well.
Earlier in a welcome address, the installation chairman, Rotarian Ugochukwu Ajawara PHF expressed confidence that the club would continue to grow under new president.
“Our incoming President, Temitope, brings a wealth of experience, passion and vision to our club. I do not doubt that under her leadership, we will continue to grow, innovate, and make a meaningful impact in our community and beyond”, Ajawara further stated.

The event which saw the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, represented by Engr. Ernest Otuonye, deliver a keynote address on the theme of the programme: “Power of service in leadership,” featured conferment of awards, recognition of areas of focus ambassadors, induction of new members, decoration of Paul Harris Fellows and inauguration of the Board of Directors.
