The Chairman of Harrison Goodness Foundation, a charity organization, Chief Richard Harrison, has called on the government at the State levels to ensure full enforcement of the Child Rights Act (CRA) to discourage child abuse in Nigeria.
Interacting with our correspondent through WhatsApp as some countries across the global village celebrates the year 2024 National Be Someone Day, Chief Harrison strongly believe that the development would help to achieve the protection of the rights of the Nigerian child against abuse and exploitation in the society.
Harrison observed that the Global reports did not only show that cases of child abuse continue to be reported daily, but most of the cases go unreported, hence the need for parents, guardians, neighbours and other members of the community to report any suspected case of abuse to the authorities.
The HGF founder recommended that the Ministries of Women Affairs; Social Development; Youth Development; Education and Information should embark on aggressive sensitization and advocacy campaigns to curb vices like drug abuse, street begging and child abuse in a bid to create a conducive socioeconomic environment for development
He further opined that the establishment of mobile courts would also address issues relating to Sexual and Gender Based Violence, SGBV.
Chief Harrison who also appreciated the Abia State Government for doing a lot to ensure that children’s rights are protected, observed that Governor Alex Otti led administration has also made its position clear in this regard and has facilitated a number of outreach programmes in different communities, citing the activities of the inaugurated State Gender Based Response Team, GBVRT and State Technical Working Group, STWG, as a glaring example.
He therefore enjoined the citizens to be the agent of a new normal, agent of change by reporting child abuse cases, and save lives.
Founded in the year 2021 by ProjectHarmony, and celebrated annually on July 21st, Be Someone Day aims to help end child abuse and bring communities together through education and awareness.
