The Management of National Youth Service Corps has notified the general public that the thunder strike incident that occurred in Abia State Orientation Camp, Umunna, on July 13, 2024 (Saturday) did not record any death as being reported in some sections of the media.
This clarification made available to newsmen by Eddy Megwa fnipr, NYSC Director, Information and Public Relations became necessary following the misleading information.
Though there was a heavy downpour in the early hours of the day with unusual thunderstorm, according to the release, the only injured female Corps Member was immediately stabilized by the dedicated Orientation Camp Medical Team from Federal Medical Centre Umuahia.
According to the release, the Corp Member was immediately referred to a hospital in Umuahia for prompt medical evaluation.
The release partly read, “The Corps Member is very stable and responding to treatment accordingly, whereas, the parents of the Corps Member have been contacted and they have confirmed that their daughter is in a very stable condition.
“The blogger that erupted the information did not get the facts of the matter from NYSC before publishing.
“NYSC as a proactive organisation, is committed to the health, well-being and security of her Corps Members at all time.
“The general public especially parents and guardians of the Corps Members currently in camp should be rest assured that the security and welfare of their children in NYSC Abia State Orientation Camp is fully guaranteed”.
Meanwhile, the NYSC Management has called on media practitioners, especially online bloggers to clarify and make consultations with the Scheme on every matter before publishing misleading and inaccurate information, that is devoid of facts about the NYSC.
