If sustained, the export of coconut oil and its derivatives would continued to generate huge revenue for Nigeria, an agriculturist and the traditional ruler of Oriendu autonomous community, Ohuhu clan in Umuahia North L.G.A, of Abia state, HRM Pastor Philip Ajomiwe gave the advice, during the June 26, National Coconut Day.
June 26 National Coconut Day was founded in 2019 by National Day Calendar® and the Coconut Coalition of the Americas.
Interacting with our correspondent through WhatsApp chat, Eze Ajomiwe, who observed that coconut oil which falls into the superfood category due to its medium-chain triglyceride (MCTs) content, pointed out that the tropical fruit has proved so far to be a major non-oil export foreign exchange earner for the country.
The royal father, who appreciated the strides recorded by the Abia State Governor Alex Otti in the agricultural sector, encouraged to add more vigour in the coconut plantation by initiating the needed overhaul from plantation rejuvenation, to value addition and planting of hybrid and improved seeds.
Eze Ajomiwe who also espoused and expounded the immense nutritional benefits of coconut oil, observed that it encourages fat burning and works as a quick source of energy among others.
Coconut is grown in 22 out of Nigeria’s 36 states, with Lagos being the largest producer, according to official data.
Also from the available records, the coconut forms the basis of a multi-billion US dollar industry. The tropical fruit is valued for its nutritious flesh, water, oil, and various by-products from the shells and husks.
The global market for coconut products is expected to reach $38.58 billion by 2030, at a compound annual growth rate of 8.4%. The increase in demand is fuelled by trends like plant-based diets, the cosmetic appeal of coconut oil, and the rising popularity of coconut as an ingredient in various food products.
