As some countries across the globe celebrates the year 2024 National Kissing Day, a psychiatrist practising in the United Kingdom, Dr. Mrs Gloria Harrison, has warned that kissing could spread germs and bacteria, potentially leading to illnesses like colds or the flu.

She also said that kissing is capable of releasing feel-good hormones like oxytocin and dopamine, which helps to boost mood and also reduce stress.

Celebrated on June 22 annually, National Kissing Day is believed to have been first created in the United Kingdom during the 1990s.

Interacting with our correspondent through WhatsApp, the medical expert, who described kissing as fun and pleasurable way to show affection and express love, however warned that it may not be enjoyable for everyone, as personal preferences and comfort levels vary.

Dr. Mrs Harrison stated, “National Kissing Day is all about celebrating the act of kissing and spreading love and affection. Kissing can strengthen bonds between partners and enhance intimacy in relationships. It can promote better communication, as it requires being attuned to your partner’s cues and responses. But public displays of affection, including kissing, can make others uncomfortable or be inappropriate in certain settings. Overemphasis on kissing as a romantic gesture can overshadow other meaningful ways of expressing love and care”.

The psychiatrist who pointed out National Kissing Day could be a fun and lighthearted way to celebrate love and affection, advised that people should be mindful of personal boundaries and respect others’ comfort levels.

From the records, historians believe the earliest references to kissing traces back to India 3,500 years ago, with four major texts in the Vedic Sanskrit literature referencing the supposed earliest forms of kissing. But, according to a new review paper in the journal Science, it says that this style of kissing is also mentioned in clay tablets from Mesopotamia that predate the Indian texts by about a thousand years.
