The Straight Child Foundation, TSCF, a Nongovernmental Organization, Saturday, June 1st 2024 extended a fun-filled children’s party to children with special needs.

Speaking during the event which took place at Ojukwu Bunker Afaraukwu-Ibeku, Umuahia, the founder of the Foundation, Dr. Mrs Peace Amaraegbulam, harped on the need for children with motor disabilities to have realistic opportunities to develop motor function through participation in sports.

According to her, sports activities could provide chances for children with Cerebral Palsy, CP to develop independence for social integration, participation, quality of life.

Amaraegbulam seized the opportunity to passionately request from the National Youth Service Corp, through the Abia State Government to a send a physiotherapist to TSCF centre to attend to the CP children that visits the Foundation which will house a pediatric rehabilitation gym soonest.

She enlightened the people gathered that physiotherapists assess, plan and implement rehabilitative programmes that improve or restore human motor functions, maximize movement ability, relieve pain syndromes, and treat or prevent challenges associated with injuries, diseases and other impairments.

Speaking also, a former Senior Special Assistant to the Abia State Governor on Disability Matters, Mr. Henry Obialor, decried that a lot of parents abandoned their children because of one disability matter or the other.

Mr. Obialor who told his success story and the positive role played by her mother, appreciated the fact that it is not an easy task to raise children with special needs.

He encouraged the parents to always give thanks to God for the children with special needs given to them, whom he described as great gifts.

“Never you regret having them, show them love and strive to discover their talents”, the former SSA to the governor tasked parents even as he encouraged them to believe in their children.

He also charged the special needs children to always have a positive thought that they are the best with amazing talents to boast of.

Obialor who appreciated the vision bearer of TSCF, Dr. Mrs Amaraegbulam for promoting and projecting the course/cause of children with special needs, promised to collaborate with the foundation in solving the sporting needs of the CP children.

In her speech, the Abia State Secretary of Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Dr. Nwachukwu Chibuzo, enjoined the children not to let people classify them by their disability but to strive to know who they are, have a driving force and a mentor to emulate or look up to.

Her words, “Most people with special needs are doctors, singers, gospel preachers and are also doing great exploits in the society. So, identify that special talent given to you by God, work on it, magnify it to be something good. Remove negative stereotypes, embrace God and stick to His promises”, Dr. Nwachukwu encouraged them.

The event which saw students from the School for the Blind, Afaraukwu; St. Vincent De Paul, Umuafia; Special Education Centre for the deaf and mentally retarded, Umuahia and other children, featured gift presentations and cutting of children’s day cake.
