The remains of the pioneer Chairman of Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE Umuahia branch, Engr. Chief Uche Joseph Ukpabi, FNSE, who died at the age of 85 (1939 – 2024), has been laid to rest in his Umuokoronkwo compound in Okoko Item, Bende L.G.A, of Abia State.

NSE in a condolence message jointly signed by Engr. Enyinnaya Romanus, Chairman NSE Umuahia branch and Engr. Okorie Dike, General Secretary, extolled the sterling qualities and performance of the deceased, who they described as a teacher, a distinguished Engineer, a father, a mentor, and a professional examiner to the Nigerian Society of Engineers in Abia State and Nigeria.

According to them, the deceased had, during his lifetime, rendered many decades of service to the society, as a career civil servant in the then Imo State and the present Abia State, which also saw him rose to the pinnacle of his career.

“The good and quality leadership trait of Engr. Chief Uche Joseph Ukpabi FNSE, MNI which is also exemplified in his daily life found him distinctively worthy to service as the pioneer Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Umuahia branch, the continuous existence of the branch is a testament to the solid foundation laid by our pioneer Chairman.

“Till his death, he remained a good ambassador of the Engineering professional which he practiced diligently with full regard for the society principle and ethics an attribute he will always be remembered for”, the condolence message partly read.

NSE Umuahia branch encouraged the bereaved family to strong and cherish the memories of the deceased.

Earlier in a sermon captioned, “Who will carry you when you die”, during the funeral service held at Greenfield comprehensive secondary school, Okoko Item, the Methodist Archbishop, Methodist Church Nigeria, Umuahia archdiocese, Most Rev. Chibuzo Opoko who narrated the biblical story of the Rich man and Lazarus, enjoined the bereaved family, mourners and the entire gathering to live a life that will earn them eternal life.

Presenting a tribute on behalf of the bereaved family, TPL Ukeje Uche Ukpabi, Permanent Secretary, Abia State Ministry of Lands and Housing expressed gratitude to God, who gave his father the grace to live an exemplary life.

He disclosed that his late father who died on the 17th day of January, 2024 has no hatred against anyone and had eternal life in his heart before he moved on.

The Speaker, Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa; former Abia Head of Service, Sir Onyi Wamah; former chairmen of NSE Umuahia branch, Engr. Richard Onyenso FNSE; Engr. Victor Ihediwa FNSE; Engr. Uzoma Ohia; Alumni Association of National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, AANI led by the Abia State chapter chairman, Chief Mrs Love Ezema, among other dignitaries and organizations graced the funeral service.
