A sociocultural organization known as Igbo Vanguard Group, IVG has enjoined Nigerians to shun making their surroundings an eyesore but to assist the government transform it into a beautiful oasis for all citizens to enjoy.

The President General of the Organization, Engr. James Nnadozie Uchegbuo, made the call in Umuahia, Abia State, as the world observes the year 2024 Community Garden Week.

Community Garden Week is a special week-long observation, which highlights the many worthy community and school gardens that dot our landscapes. These gqardening efforts do more than add beauty (although they undoubtedly do!). Indeed, they serve as hubs for nourishing the body, mind, and soul.

Engr. Uchegbuo who expounded the importance of planting flowers and vegetables in the available spaces in the urban areas, said that these gardens do not only beautify the neighbourhoods, but growing beautiful flowers and foods, creates a secondary impact, which include revitalizing urban environments.

Uchegbuo observed that Community gardens came in response to the growing urbanization and the loss of natural spaces, observing also that community garden provides a unique solution to several urban challenges, including the lack of food security and sustainability and community cohesion.

The IVG PG who encouraged the residents to start transforming otherwise neglected plots of land into beautiful spaces (community gardens), appreciated the efforts of Abia State Governor Alex Otti’s administration geared towards restoring the aesthetic value of the state.

Community Garden Week’s roots began when people in cities began to desire a green oasis within their concrete neighborhoods. Determined residents had a great idea – they would start transforming otherwise neglected plots of land into beautiful spaces.
