Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas, ANPA has commenced its Free Medical Mission in Umuahia, Abia State, tagged “Umuahia 2024” with capacity building of support staff as well as non-governmental organisations including Academic Core Values Orientation Initiatives led by its President, Dr Ngozi Okechukwu and Rotary District 9142 under the Leadership of Rotarian Grace Okaro, who served the District as Governor in 2022-2023 Rotary year.
Speaking with newsmen, the Chairman, Local Organizing Committee of the programme and Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, Professor Azubuike Onyebuchi disclosed the team’s readiness to handle 340 surgical cases in addition to several medical cases which include five hundred eye cases during the Mission.
Professor Azubuike disclosed that the team which carried out five surgeries on Friday (yesterday) night was ready to perform other surgeries over the weekend before the formal kickoff of the Mission on Monday.
Also speaking, the President of Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas, Dr. Mrs Chinyere Anyaogu-Eziri said ANPA annually organize free medical missions but decided to come to Umuahia to support the great work Governor Alex Otti is doing.
She said during ANPA week with stakeholders, they will perform in Abia State, medical service, capacity building and advocacy in line with their vision to have healthier Nigerians and healthier World.
Dr Anyaogu-Eziri disclosed that five surgeries were carried out on Friday night which ended on Saturday morning 6th April, 2024 by 2.00 am.
Contributing, the National President of Abia State National Association of North America, which comprises US and Canada, High Chief Enyinnaya Alamba said they were glad to partner with ANPA to provide free medical care to Abians and commended the ANPA President, Dr Chinyere Anyaogu-Eziri and Chairman Local Organizing Committee, Professor Azubuike Onyebuchi.
Chief Alamba said he was impressed when he visited the facilities at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia where the surgeries are taking place.
One the Surgeons from America, Dr Iyore James from Edo State who joined Dr. Obi to start transplant program at FMC Umuahia in 2018, said she was ready to assist people enjoy their health.
Speaking on behalf of Rotary International District 9142, Nigeria in appreciation of ANPA and other NGOs involved in the Mission, PDG Grace Okaro commended all the stakeholders especially ANPA for the choice of Umuahia as the host city for this year’s Medical Mission.
She pledged Rotary’s support to ensure the success of the mission calling on Abians to leverage the gesture to receive free Medicare to improve their status.
