Not less than 43 defaulters have been arrested in the month of March, environmental sanitation exercise held in Abia State, particularly in Umuahia on Saturday 23rd March, 2024.

Interacting with newsmen shortly after the monitoring the level of compliance, the State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, frowned that most residents have willfully and willingly made themselves constant and consistent deviants, sabotaging the Abia must be clean efforts of the government.

He warned that if such individuals do not turn a new leaf, the Ministry might take a stringent step to serve as a deterrence to others.

The Commissioner moreover observed a great improvement in the exercise, which he expressed optimism would be sustained in line with the vision of the Governor.

“There is a great improvement from the previous exercise. We deployed more resources to make the exercise more efficient and effective. And many Abians are responding to the calls of Governor Alex Otti to keep Abia clean. Abians are now doing it voluntarily.

“I also want to tell those who are yet to key into this vision that the monthly environmental sanitation exercise has come to stay in Abia and the exercise is not exclusive to a set of people but to all Abians”, Ogbonna pointed out.

Contributing, the Chairman House Committee on Environment and the member representing Ohafia South State Constituency, Hon Kalu Mba Nwoke, frowned at the attitude of some security agents who indulge in transport business during the sanitation exercise and called on them to show respect to the sanitation law, support and show commitment to the exercise.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Prof. Ijeoma Iheukwumere, advised Abians to shun blocking the drains with refuse to avoid flood disaster, particularly as the rains sets in.

She also warned those trading at the Isi-gate  axis of Umuahia and transporters to be patient and respect the hours mapped out for the sanitation exercise, as anything contrary tantamount to sabotaging the exercise.

Prof. Iheukwumere called on Abians to play a supportive role in the environmental sanitation exercise as a healthy Abian, is one who lives in a clean and green environment.

Meanwhile, shortly after the sanitation exercise, some people were seen preparing to clear the bushy parts of the premises of Umuahia North LG Headquarters.
