As Nigeria joined the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8, 2024, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the rights of women, girls, and children, Vivacious Development Initiative (VIDI), has advocated for the full and meaningful participation of women in all aspects of society.

In a release made available to our correspondent by Amb. Onyinyechi Joy Nwosu, Executive Director, VIDI, the Organization urged individuals, communities, organizations and governments to recommit to advancing gender equality, promoting women’s rights, and building a world where every woman and girl can thrive and fulfill her potential.

Amb. Nwosu who enjoined the critical stakeholders to join hands to invest in women and accelerate progress for a more inclusive and equitable world, pointed out that VIDI strives to create a more just, equitable, and inclusive society for all.

She pointed out that International Women’s Day commemorates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women worldwide, and also served as a call to action for gender equality and accelerating progress.

“International Women’s Day holds special significance as it recognizes the invaluable contributions of women throughout history and reaffirms our collective commitment to achieving gender parity in all aspects of life. As we celebrate the achievements of women, we also acknowledge the challenges and inequalities they continue to face, particularly in regions affected by conflict and insecurity.

“n many war-torn countries,  and also regions of Nigeria where banditry has transformed some communities into a dangerous zone of predation, women bear the brunt of violence, displacement, and economic hardship.

“VIDI stands in solidarity with these resilient women, recognizing their strength and perseverance in the face of adversity. We are committed to advocating for their rights, providing support, and empowering them to rebuild their lives and communities.

“This year’s theme – Invest In Women: Accelerate Progress, resonates deeply with VIDI’s mission and values. We firmly believe that investing in women is not only a moral imperative but also an essential catalyst for societal progress and development. When women are empowered and given equal opportunities, entire communities thrive, economies prosper, and societies become more inclusive and resilient”, Amb. Onyinyechi Joy Nwosu, pointed out.

Amb. Nwosu who also pointed out that VIDI rejects the notion that the rise of women signifies the fall of men, said, “We believe that gender equality benefits everyone and leads to a more just, equitable, and prosperous world for all. The empowerment of women is not a zero-sum game; it is the pathway to shared progress and prosperity”.

She further maintained that when women are included, valued, and empowered, the world will collectively forge a brighter future for generations to come.
