2023: Police assure Umuahia North LG of peaceful election as political parties sign peace accord

The Nigerian Police, Abia State command has called on House of Assembly candidates from Umuahia North L.G.A, to join hands with them to witness a peaceful election in the area.

CSP Lawrence Olurensola, DPO Central Police Station, Umuahia made the call in Umuahia North headquarters on Saturday at an event for signing of peace accord by political parties in the local government ahead of the 2023 general election.

Olurensola, who chaired the session, said the meeting was aimed at stimulating healthy

interaction and mutual discussion on matters relating to the overall conduct of the general election.

It was witnessed by representatives of security and paramilitary agencies in the state as well as the representative of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Addressing the leaders and candidates of the political parties whose turn out was not quite impressive, the DPO, urged the politicians, the candidates and their agents to put Umuahia North first in their campaigns.

He said the peace accord is aimed at “bestowing on our society an acceptable, free, fair and credible electoral process.” 

Speaking shortly after signing the peace accord, the African Democratic Congress, ADC candidate for Umuahia North State Constituency, Rev. Blessed Amalambu decried that the ideals and ideas of leadership has been misconstrued by some desperate politicians, maintaining that leadership service to humanity should not be a do or die affair.

While calling for a level playground for all political parties and their candidates, Amalambu maintained that he is a peace loving man and enjoined other candidates to embrace peace and encourage their supporters to abide by the rules of the game.

Speaking respectively, the PDP House of Assembly candidate for Umuahia North State Constituency, Chief Ugochukwu Ezeocha and the ADC candidate for Umuahia East State Constituency, Hon. Chiadikobi Elesigwe appreciated the efforts of the Nigerian Police to give Abia and Umuahia North a credible election and harped on the need for decorum while the electoral processes lasted.

Particularly, Hon. Elesigwe lauded the INEC on the electoral law and other efforts put in place to give Nigerians the most credible election in 2023.
