16 Days of Activism against GBV: MOWASD to collaborate with Abia NAWOJ

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ Abia State chapter has moved to collaborate with the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, MOWASD.

This action taken by the Caretaker Committee of the Association was part of their positive steps to successfully accomplish the task given by the National Executive Council of NAWOJ for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based

Violence.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence with the Year 2022 global theme, “UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls” is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

Speaking in the Commissioner’s office in Umuahia during the visit, the Chairperson, Caretaker Committee of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Mrs Oluchi Lechi-Ikechukwu disclosed that the led administration of NAWOJ National President, Comrade Ladi Bala does not take for granted issues that affect women and girl-child.

According to her, NAWOJ as an Association abhors acts like intimate partner violence, sexual violence, child marriage, female genital mutilation, trafficking for sexual exploitation and other Gender-Based Violence or Violence Against Women and Girls.

She disclosed further that her led caretaker committee had carried out series of programmes in the state, which include: Monkeypox sensitization/enlightenment campaign; awareness campaign at Holy Rosary Girls Secondary school, Umuahia during the recently celebrated International Day for Girl Child among other programmes.

Mrs Lechi-Ikechukwu who also briefed the Commissioner, Deaconess Nna Rose Urenta on the assignment given to the Committee by the NAWOJ National body, reiterated their vision to rejig and rejuvenate Abia NAWOJ and also birth an elected executive through the most peaceful, fair, free, transparent, verifiable and credible election.

While presenting the Award of Excellent performance won by her led administration, Mrs Lechi-Ikechukwu passionately solicited the support of the Commissioner to enable her Caretaker Committee achieve their set goals and sail through successfully.

Responding, Deaconess Nna Rose Urenta, Abia State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development appreciated the vibrancy and the “I can do it” spirit in the Abia NAWOJ caretaker committee and expressed the readiness and preparedness of the Ministry to collaborate with the Association.

She informed that the wife of the State Governor, Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu has made a laudable difference in the fight against Gender-Based Violence, adding that the performance indices of the State in addressing Gender-Based Violence has kept on soaring because of the Wife of the Governor’s role.

She encouraged Mrs Lechi-Ikechukwu and her Committee to keep on bearing the cross of serving God and humanity and also strive to organize and conduct a peaceful election for NAWOJIANS in the state.

“As Lioness, keep Abia NAWOJ strong. Give the Association a new lift, so that people will see a new development and be attracted to join the NAWOJ in Abia State. Our children will also be proud of you and will also be proud to belong to NAWOJ”, Deaconess Urenta further encouraged the Abia NAWOJ caretaker committee.

Also in their respective remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Very Rev’d Jane Omereonye and Southeastern States Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Commander Ambrose Nnabugwu (Rtd) appreciated the trail blazed by the Caretaker Committee of Abia State NAWOJ within the period under review and encouraged them not to relent but to forge ahead with their advocacy.
